Remarkable Girls Season Comes To A Close
The Andes Varsity Girls team fell short today of a victory over a highly ranked experienced Emestom girls varsity team in the second round of the sectional playoffs. This season was a remarkable one for the Lady Mountaineers it was simply fabu. Thank you ladies for a great season and special thanks to coaches Tom Little and Sandra Noonan for a job well done.
All of you fans and followers are very proud.

The girls varsity may have come away from Edmeston without a win but so far they are 2 and 0 on bets.

Sectionals: Girls Shock Candor 3-2 in Overtime
Girls Shock Candor

They came. They saw. They conquered.
The Andes girls’ soccer team faced a daunting challenge in the first round of the Section IV playoffs. Having reached the Sectionals for the first time in over a decade, the 12th seeded Lady Mountaineers squared off against 5th seeded Candor. But, that’s only part of the story. Candor is located at the farthest reaches of the Section, and the Andes ladies traveled 2 ½ hours to even get to the game.
The Andes coaches Sandra Noonan and Tom Little changed their warm-up routine to shake out the riding numbness and get their charges going. The pregame alterations seemed to be just what the Doctor ordered as the Mountaineers brought their A game from the opening kickoff.
Offensively, Andes leading scorer Mariah Ruff had to enjoy playing a team that had never seen her play before. Although Ruff was marked well throughout the contest, the eighth grade sparkplug shook free enough to score all three goals for Andes.
Ruff scored her first goal from the middle of the field in front of the nets with 16:16 to play in the opening half. The lead almost lasted until the half, but Candor tied things up when Kendra Wagstaff delivered with just one minute to play.
Ruff was at it again just after half time. The spunky striker put Andes back in front, 2-1, scoring again less than three minutes into the final half.
Great defensive play and work in the goal by Jenna Weaver protected the advantage for most of the half. But, a penalty kick would be more than the Andes defense could handle. Wagstaff converted the free kick to tie the score with only four minutes left in regulation time.
Andes was undaunted, and Ruff delivered again, minutes into the first overtime. This time a defensive clear was stopped by Ruff and tapped into the nets for the game winning score. Ruff’s third score came with 4:44 to play in the first overtime. The Lady Mountaineer defense held fast for the rest of the first extra frame and all ten minutes of the second, preserving the dramatic, 3-2, victory.
The game marks the sixth time this season the Andes girls have played in overtime. Andes challenges only grow in proportion, as the Mountaineers move to the quarterfinals Friday to face top seeded Edmeston. Edmeston shared the Section IV title last year with Davenport and the New York Class D State Championship with S.S. Seward. The game will be played at Edmeston with a 3:30 p.m. starting time.

Andes Youth: Andes Outplays Gilboa 1-0
Gilboa, Andes Youth kept their current streak alive by outscoring a larger, very talented Gilboa team last night. Andes only goal came from Sam Fabrykiewicz late in the game to break the deadlock. The Mountaineers defense rose to the occasion shutting down the Gilboa's offense.

Gilboa, Coming off a hard game with the SK girls, an exhausted girls team dropped to a well rested skillful Gilboa girls team 5-1 last night. Mariah Ruff provided the only Andes goal off an assist from Gina Tait.

Andes Girls Soccer Coach Gets A Shave

When it was finally finished, Andes Girls Soccer Co-Coach Tom Little had a strange tingling sensation above his upper lip. The Andes coach lost his moustache at a school-wide assembly Friday, fulfilling a pre-season promise he had made to his team.
Little made his pledge during the first week of summer practice, promising his team that should they win four games during the 2009 season, he would allow them to shave away his moustache. Since the Mountaineers had not won a soccer game in over a decade, most soccer fans probably felt Little’s whiskers were safe. Not Little. “I liked the profile of this year’s team,” explained Little. “I was pretty sure if we played up to our talent, four wins or more was a pretty realistic goal for the girls to chase.”
Little’s challenge ignited his team. When at long last Andes broke into the winner’s column in their second game of the season, the foundation was in place. Last week, when the Lady Mountaineer’s upended Roscoe, 4-0, they accomplished two goals; first winning the championship of the Cohen Classic, and equally as important to the girls, winning their fourth game of the year.
A school-wide assembly was scheduled where Little would make good on his pledge. As the time approached, the Andes coach had second doubts. He was reluctant to lose his mustache of 19 years. Thursday morning students arrived at school to find Little marching back and forth on the sidewalk in front of the school carrying a picket sign reading “Save the Stash.” Little protested seeking empathy from students and staff and requesting a school-wide vote to save his stash. The vote was held, but Little could only rally one voter to support his stance. Persistent to the end, Little fired off an e-mail to Governor Patterson’s office pleading for a pardon. No response was received.
So, Friday afternoon, Little sat on a chair in front of the student body and staff. Each of the Andes girls’ soccer players got a scissor’s swipe at their coach taking away some upper lip hair. With a bucket of water, razor, shaving cream, and a mirror in hand, Little finished the job. When the job was done, Little was more than pleased with the work of his Lady Mountaineers and trying to adjust to the numbing sensation over his upper lip.
So, what’s next? Never one to skirt a challenge, Little has extended a new goal to his team. If the Andes girls’ manage to reach the Section IV playoffs, Little has agreed that they can die his hair. When asked what color he would like, should the girls meet the challenge, he replied, “Brown!” Yeah, right. Doubt it, Coach.

Hunter No Show; Youth Scrimmages Seniors
Saturday at 9:30 the Andes Youth team assembled to play Hunter. The Hunter team never showed offering the explaination that the parents didn't want to drive so far.Coach Eddie Bacon saved the day by drafting the parents for an impromptu scrimmage. The younger faster players outplayed and outscored the older more experienced oxygen deprived seniors. Sam Fabryiewicz kept his hat trick streak alive with another 3 goals, bringing his season total to 12 Zack Rachael Sluiter and Trevor Terry also added a goal apiece.

There was no lack of excitement in Jefferson Thursday, as the Andes girls continued to play competitive and inspired soccer. The Lady Mountaineers, fresh off their championship in the Cohen Classic, battled the JayHawks through two overtimes before falling, 5-4, to the host team.
The game turned into a scoring shoot-out between Jefferson’s Katy Clayton and Andes Mariah Ruff. Both high flying forwards delivered hat tricks, scoring three goals apiece. It was Clayton’s final strike that proved to be the game winner with 4:11 to play in the first extra period.
Jefferson led the Mountaineers, 2-1, at halftime, but Andes outscored their hosts, 3-2, in the second half to send the game into the extra periods. Kaitlin Mackay tied the score at 4-4 with 13:30 to play in regulation time.
Chelsea Martin and Amy Thonnesan also scored for Jefferson.
Next up for Andes is South Kortright. The Lady Mountaineers will host SK on Monday, October 6.

The resurgent Andes Girls’ Soccer team made history again Tuesday when they downed Roscoe, 4-0, to win the championship of the first ever Cohen Classic. Andes had upset the host school Margaretville, 3-2, in opening round action and brought home the title with a convincing win over Roscoe.
Andes used unselfish passing to dominate play throughout the contest, but goals didn’t come easily in the early going. Kailtin Mackay tallied the only score of the opening half scoring unassisted midway through the half.
Mariah Ruff gave the Mountaineers some breathing room early in the second half. Ruff used a pass from Mackay, turning on the ball to take a shot that sailed high into the right hand corner of the nets for Andes second score.
Andes added on nicely, scoring two more times in the half. Shianne Coss threaded a pass along the ground from the right wing, finding Karli Tait open for the Mountaineer’s third goal. Ruff scored her second goal of the game on an assist from Rayna Tuch to complete the scoring.
The win was Andes fourth of the season reaching the team goal set in the preseason and meaning that Co-coach Tom Liddle will be losing his moustache soon. The Andes girls are now 4-4-1 on the season and will continue their bid to reach the Section IV playoffs in Jefferson on Thursday, October 1.

Andes Nudges Delh 4-1
Delhi, In a hard fought battle under a grizzly autumn drizzle,
Andes outscored Delhi 4 to 1 to claim bragging rights to their annual
classic. Sam Fabrykiewicz extended his streak of hat tricks to 3 with 3 goals and Zack conributed his first goal of the season. Mike Bryden scored Delhi's lone goal. The game was well coached and attended.

Moustache Watch
Is tonight the night? Coach Tom Little's "Stache" is on the line. It's no longer a question of if but when.
The deal is that when the girls win their 4th game Tom shaves! Come and watch the drama as the girls varisty takes on the Margaretville Blue Devils who are looking to revenge their loss to the Mountaineers earlier this month. The girls play at home tonight. Will Tom's moustache last another week? Stay tuned.

Youth Soccer Andes Ties Margaretville 4-4
Margaretville, The Andes Youth soccer team tied Margaretville 4-4 last night in Margaretville. Sam Fabrykiewicz had a hat trick (3 goals) while Trevor Terry contributed one. Apologies for not having pictures, the game ran concurrent with the boy's varsity game and that game ran late.
Girls Varsity Girls Deflates Stamford 2-1
The Varsity Girls soccer team turned back the Stamford Girls 2-1 in Stamford under the lights last night. Apology to the team for the poor quality "worst photo's ever" the camera works different at night. I've still have some learning to do....sorry. Someone please email me the scoring details as I got to the game late and I would like to post them.

Andes Youth Team -Last Practice Before Season Opener
In the last practice before the youth soccer opener Coach Eddie Bacon (the hardest working coach in soccer) tunes up his team. The team is young and eager and returning high scorer Sam Fabrykiewicz is anxious to play. The team plays Margaretville in Margaretville on Tuesday at 5:30.
