Andes v Jefferson

Daily Star Write Up

Andes 52, Jefferson 51

Tyler Dibble hit a baseline jumper as time expired and was fouled, but the Jefferson junior missed the ensuing free throw as host Andes held on for a Delaware League victory.

Dibble finished with 31 points, including 11 of the J-Hawks' final 13 points over the last 3 1/2 minutes.

"He was just off-the-wall remarkable," Mountaineers coach John Bernhardt said of Dibble, the area's scoring leader.

With 5.3 seconds left and Andes ahead, 52-49, the Mountaineers had possession in their defensive end. Stephen Schmitt, who hit five three-pointers in Jefferson's 59-41 win over Andes earlier this season, stole the pass and took a three-pointer that missed. Dibble tracked down the miss in the corner, but Andes' gym isn't wide enough to have three-point lines in the corner, so the only way for Jefferson to forge a tie would be if an Andes player fouled Dibble as he the shot.

"There's no possible way for them to tie it unless we fouled him and he was fouled," Bernhardt said, "and more than one person wanted to foul him. You want to talk about a depressed person."

Dibble's free throw with no time left hit the front rim.

"I felt bad for that kid because he's such a competitor," Bernhardt said. "I'm sure he feels like he lost the game, but that was one of the most impressive games you can play. He was just a warrior. He never stopped."

Eric Reed led Andes with 21 points. Josh Bonifacic finished with 10 and Sage Beemer contributed eight.

The Mountaineers (8-7, 6-7) host Gilboa on Senior Night Tuesday.
