Andes Shocks Roxbury 46-43

Daily Star Write Up

Eric Reed's three-pointer with 38 seconds remaining gave host Andes the lead for good in a 46-43 boys basketball victory over Roxbury on Thursday.

The Mountaineers (4-4, 2-4) scored the final 10 points. DaVaun Morgan's three-pointer from the left side with 2:29 to go put Roxbury (7-3, 6-2) up, 43-36.

Josh Bonifacic (10 points) started the rally when he grabbed a rebound off his own miss and hit a jumper from the middle of the paint to make it 43-38. Cody Ruff scored in transition to cut the deficit to 43-40, then made a long pass to Reed for a layup to make it 43-42 with 48 seconds left.

Roxbury turned the ball over in the backcourt and Andes inbounded to Ruff, who passed to Reed. His three from the left side gave Andes a 45-43 lead.

Reed hit 1 of 2 from the foul line with 4.4 seconds left. Morgan then took a three-pointer from half-court that fell short.

"It's the first time in two years where we've been behind by double digits and came back and won a game," Andes coach John Bernhardt said. "I was pleased. We played very hard. We only have six guys and they all have to contribute."

Reed finished with 25 points for the Mountaineers, who received 10 points and 15 rebounds from Bonifacic. Ruff had seven assists. Bernhardt also pointed out the defense of Peter Fabrykiewicz and Russell Koronowski, who guarded Morgan (15 points).

"(Morgan) has the potential to score 30 points," Bernhardt said. "Their hard work on defense was critical."

Dylan Stock contributed 12 points for Roxbury, which received nine from Kyle Ciaravino. Andes visits Stamford at 1 p.m. Saturday in a varsity-only game.
